As the title suggests, Barbet really LOVE snow. Especially when they are in their full standard coat. The second weekend in December was our first true snow fall as we accumulated a couple inches in Indiana. The first thing our Barbet do is plunge their beards (where they got their name, Barbe in French means beard) into the snow. Politically incorrect, we call the cold powdery stuff doggy crack, as once our fleecy friends get a whiff they frap (franctic running and playing).

The cold doesn’t seem to effect them and they roll, jump, slide, and wag their tails through the falling flakes. One of our favorite games to play with them during snow is to toss out in our 1 acre fenced yard several bones (cooked cow bones, ham– never cooked turkey/chicken as they splinter) into their wooded play ground. Then the fun is watching them use their dog given talents to seek out these culinary treats. I’m not going to call out the slow poke in the pack, but I will note my 7 pound pack leading Chihuahua tends to find them first.

Barbet Lia, who just turned 1, is seen here in the Indiana snow with her trainee Isis. Much to Lia’s dismay, Isis loves to follow Lia during fetch. Isis is really picking up on frisbee while Cleo is having a blast following Belle. They all have the most amazing time in the snow. I can not wait until the next flakes fall as it’s less muddy for one but the pack love to roll, fetch, and “frap” (frantic running and playing) while in the cold stuff.

A fun fact about Barbet tails since you can see it in the photo below.. often when Barbet are happy or interested in something their tails will be held up high. The standard is a crochet hook it long and curved with a slight hook at the end often to be held low/straight behind the body. You can see in Lia and Isis that they are having a blast so their tails are held up higher than normal.
