Our Barbet puppies are 6 weeks old now

After photographing artisan marshmallows for 240sweet.com, I completed my puppies 6 week old portraits on a plain studio backdrop. You can see them really transforming into wee Barbet dogs. We’re not sure how we’ll be able to let all of these pups go soon, but our hand picked families are all excited as are we for these Barbet puppies to begin their new lives.

Barbet Coco’s first snow

The one thing I really love about winter in addition to the holiday cheer, is to see Barbet in the snow. Our Thanksgiving puppies are certainly in for a treat as they’ll get to experience snow as wee pups. Many families feel spring/summer is the best time to get a puppy, but for a Barbet puppies, they thrive and love the winter time. This brings a Barbet story to mind that my husband tells often.

When he brought Xela home from Boston to Indiana he had a few other Barbet puppies that went to Chicago. Upon arriving in Columbus, he let the puppies out in the yard in about a foot of snow. All three of these 10 week old Barbet puppies went in full FRAP (frantic running and playing) mode licking, eating, sliding, and frolicking in the winter scape. Since then, every year during our first great snow fall we take our adult Barbet and perhaps puppies this year, too, outside for a romp. The cold doesn’t phase them as they chase frisbees, snow balls, and a blast.

The first Barbet to live in Minnesota, Coco, is in winter heaven as her owners sent me a photo of her. Her abominable-snow-bet face says it all.

Love LOVE love when I get grandpuppy photos. Just this morning, I received a great fall photo of Coco pre haircut. I wish these pups were closer but I’m happy getting photos. Thank you Stotz Family for sharing!

Barbet puppies planned to be born in November in America!

After months of planning, driving to Canada to get hips tested, and more driving to mate, Barbet Cleo is anticipating her first litter sired by Disco in mid to late November! I’ve taken my time to post the news as I didn’t want to count my Barbet puppies before they hatched. However now that we have confirmation she’s pregnant I’m thrilled and happy to post she’ll have her litter in 2-3 weeks from now!

Both Barbet Cleo and Disco are mellow, sweet, happy Barbet and I’m beyond thrilled for this upcoming Barbet puppy litter in America. This will our 4th litter in over 7 years of owning the Barbet breed and I believe the 8th litter born in America. I chose Disco as the sire, as after spending several days with him at the World Dog Show this past summer in Paris, I knew he would be the perfect compliment to Cleo. Disco is also a CKC champion.

Disco recently scored Excellent with the OFA for hips and normal Cerf eyes. Cleo has normal Cerf eyes and her OVC came back as normal. You can see Disco’s results at http://www.offa.org/ and Cleo’s at http://www.ovc.uoguelph.ca/cfmx/hip-elbow/search/advanced.cfm

Barbet Puppy Bric at almost 6 months of age– a Indianapolis meet up

Yesterday I felt like the happiest and luckiest Barbet breeder in North America as I was able to see my grand puppy, Bric. His owner, Lynn and her super nice sister, were passing through Indianapolis on the Antique Trail (which I’ll need to learn more about) so my husband and I went up to visit at a area park. There are no words really how happy, and wonderful this little guy is and how proud I am of him. In our home, he was known as Brogan, my surname, and he has become such a beautiful Barbet. He still has some growing and filling out to do, but his happy, docile, playful temperament is priceless. He reminds me of when we picked up his grandfather, Cinna, in France as Cinna was roughly 6 months of age and had that same happy demeanor.

Introducing the new generation of Barbet flushing, hunting, and retrievers: Guinness Barbochos! She is the daughter of the beautiful Barbet huntress, Bibiche. I own Bibiche’s brother from a year younger, Cinna, as well as Guinness’s brother Murphy! I hope one day some of my puppies can follow in Aunt Bibiche’s beautiful Barbet foot steps.

American born Barbet Coco (formerly Basal), a puppy from Barbet parents, Lia and Jacques, lives happily in Minnesota. Her family sent me the most adorable photos of her having a grand ol time in the sprinklers which coincidentally is a great way to acclimate Barbet puppies to water.

We began lightly teaching our Barbet puppies to be interested in bird wings at 6 weeks. Several of them were fascinated by the wings and couldn’t get enough of them. SO amazing to see natural instincts at that young age. When we did our Volhard temperament/personality testing at 7 weeks one puppy even retrieved!!

Lynn, new owner of Bric has been sending me puppy updates from her Barbet puppy. She picked up Bella (Barcelona) for her sister in law, and Bric (Brogan) last week and their photo updates are what make me want to continue to be a Barbet Breeder.
