Barbet in Poland: Argo

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

On my American Barbet blog, I wanted to feature Barbet in America but also Barbet across the globe. So without further ado let me introduce Tomasz. He is a stellar Barbet owner of Argo in Poland. He is the mastermind behind the frenchwaterdog.org as well as a devoted pet owner to his Barbet Argo. His girlfriend is also a pretty good photographer which is key to my barbet heart of course! On a recent summer excursion, they brought their camera, and barbet Argo along. Check out some of their beautiful photos : http://kula.ndl.pl/index.php/galeria/nad-rzeka/ featuring Argo and friends swimming and fetching in the water.

You can keep up on Tomasz’s regular blog: http://kula.ndl.pl/if you need help with translation (I know I do.. my polish skills do not exist) use: translate.google.com/

A Brief History of the Coton de Tulear

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Tracey, the treasurer of the Barbet Fanciers Club of America found a great website referencing the Barbet.

An except from this site briefly mentions the Barbet: “The Coton de Tulear is a member of the Bichon [pronounced "BEE-shawn"] family of dogs. The Bichons (as well as the Poodle and Briard) are descendents of an ancient European breed, the Barbet.”

To read more about the history of the Coton de Tulear, a descendant of the Barbet go to their website: http://cotonclub.org/history.html

Barbet Puppies

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Many of you readers may/may not know that I am a breeder of Barbet in America. We have had Barbet for 6 years now and my sister in law has had one since 2000. I am very proud of what the Barbet community in America has accomplished in that short time and can not wait for what is to come.

I get a few emails and calls a week inquiring about Barbet puppies and litters. I try to be open and honest with people and help them understand these dogs are not a dime a dozen like labradoodles. My husband and I fervently believe in good breeding practices and do not rely on puppies for money. I find that to be the biggest break down in good breeding practices. My husband does capital investing as well as runs a non for profit in Guatemala called Seeds of Help. I am a Indianapolis wedding photographer and graphic designer.

We we breed because we adore the Barbet. Any money made goes into toys, vet care, training, food, and dog shows. We’ve had 2 litters in 4 years and plan on having 1 this winter and 1 in the spring of 2011. If you are wanting a Barbet puppy you should get on a breeders waiting list as wait times can be 9-18 months. Most Barbet have a strict spay/neuter contract to protect the integrity of the breed and prevent unwanted pregnancies or labradoodle mishaps.

I suggest also you do your research on a breeder and ask them LOTS of questions. The Friendly Barbet has a fabulous blog post on things to ask. Chris and Ula are similar in age to Walter and I. They are Barbet breeders in Canada whom I trust and admire for their integrity, perseverance in dog shows, and hunting/training. You can read their post “it breaks our hearts”

Sorry for my rant, but there has been lots of shenanigans lately and I hope you prospective Barbet buyers do your research. Make sure the breeder is on good terms with the CKC or AKC (and the law), provides proper registration paperwork in a timely fashion, has a spay/neuter contract, doesn’t treat dogs as a business commodity, and so on. Don’t be afraid to google the person and ask for vet/references. If things don’t pan out DON’T buy from them.  As Chris and Ula say “Please make an informed choice on which breeders you would like to support and whom you PROMOTE.”

What’s a blog post without a photo.. here are the loves of my life born Jan 2009… If you look closely you’ll see a tiny white paw which is Gingko de Xelaju Amelia aka Lia who is the love of my life.

Barbet Dog Days of Summer

Friday, June 11th, 2010

It’s summer time so my Barbet are living it up. There is lots of frisbee, walks, bird watching, squirrel hating, and head-hanging-out-the-window car rides. Since I’m a wedding photographer, unfortunately my barbet blog gets sidled at times. I’ll try to take some video and photos and keep things somewhat updated.

The other night we had a wee little boxer puppy visit and Lia was a gracious host (so long as the pup didn’t try to take the frisbee). You can see some photos below.

My Favorite Barbet Photo

Friday, June 4th, 2010

I really can’t say much to describe this photo other than WOW. GREAT shot Walda! Being a photographer (www.stacyable.com) it takes quite a bit to impress me and this really did… the expression, the rare white/black pied Barbet. I hope it makes you as happy as it does me! barbet dog photo

About Dog Registries and Kennel Clubs

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

Another great wealth of information is this website about dog registries. http://www.wonderpuppy.net/kc.htm Being there are many ruthless puppy mill people in nice packages there are things you should ask and know before getting a puppy. I’ll go in depth on that topic later but for now read the above site and know about the various kennel clubs and scams in America.

Being the Barbet is not fully recognized with the AKC in America yet, the dogs are commonly registered with the Canadian Kennel Club, CKC, to keep a full registry going. Also if the dog is imported they will respectively have a pedigree from that country. In France that is usually the SCC or FCI. Note– the FCI pedigree is not accepted by the AKC or AKC FSS.

Dog Color Coat Genetics

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

Here is a wealth of information on dog coat color genetics. The Barbet has fawn, brown, black, and pied color varieties in the old blood lines so if you have interest check out this website. http://homepage.usask.ca/~schmutz/dogcolors.html

Barbet Lola

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Introducing Barbet Lola aka “momma Lola” to us. She is one of the first Barbet to be imported to America. She was brought over from Europe in 2000 by my sister in law. Lola then had a litter in 2004 with Up to Date aka Esko. She had 8 beautiful Barbet babies which then made me hooked and American Barbet was born. Lola is now 10 years old and I had the joy of babysitting her while out in DC. At her young age of 10, Lola is still peppy as ever. When I laced her up for a walk, Lola would prance around with her leash in her mouth rearing to go.

Below are some photos of Lola leisurely enjoying life in Alexandria, Virginia.

Barbet Dyna’s a Top Dog Model

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

If you haven’t guessed by all my incessant need to post photos rather than stories/text I’m a photographer by trade. This week (the first week in April) I’ve been dog sitting Dyna and Momma Lola (Barbet not Lola the Chihuahua) in Alexandria, Virginia. In between walks, cuddling, I’ve had a couple photo shoots and I figured why not put Dyna into a couple shots? Well she, as always, was a great dog and model this time, too. See for yourself:

Barbet Cleo meet Portuguese water dog Luna

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

Through the years in having Barbet I’ve wanted to see more water dogs up close so I can have an idea as the similarities and differences between them. Recently, a friend of a friend in Indiana just got an adorable 12 week old Portuguese Water Dog and I brought mellow Barbet Cleo over to meet Luna.

Cleo was a gracious guest and put up with Luna’s puppy tugs and sniffs. It was so much fun to watch as Luna circled Cleo nosing, pawing, and trying to get Cleo’s attention. Eventually Cleo raised her teeth as if to say “calm down there kid” and Luna flopped over in submission. Minutes later Luna was creeping back for more.

Here are some photos of the two at play
