Here is a short clip of my Barbet (American Barbet!) … you can see puppies Cleo and Isis and adults Cinna, Lia, and Dyna. It was taken awhile ago as Cleo and Isis are 8 months old and nearly full grown but it’s still a cute run through of my Barbet family here in Indiana.

American Barbet play Frisbee in Snow
Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010Here is a fun video of my Barbet romping in snow. Notice Cinna’s sly move to bring the frisbee to Walter then duck and run… He LOVES to play chase with the frisbee with the other Barbet. What is interesting is his daughter, Lia is a champion frisbee player who is now starting to catch the frisbee!

Many shades of a Barbet
Saturday, May 22nd, 2010The Barbet come in many colors. If you look at the old photos and paintings of the Barbet you’ll see many of them were parti colors (mostly white with large black spots), brown, and so forth.
My first experiences with barbet were with predominately black colored pooches. As I further delved into the water dog world I found there were so many more colors and not to mention old blood lines to pursue. In my home, I’m fortunate to have a couple color variations with I feel is great for my breeding program and America.
Here is a photo of
three of my five Barbet. Notice the rich black color of Isis which still has a red tone, then the maroon/mahogany brown of Cleo, and last but not least the fawn beigey red of Lia my puppy with the white paw. Of course there’s my the redhead of the group
I’ll be out of town for a week so if there is internet in my destination I’ll blog some more but if not hope you all have a great week!

Barbet Lia’s World
Friday, April 16th, 2010Amelia or Lia to most really is my girl. She’s a bit small on the current Barbet standard scale (depending on what standard you feel is the correct one) but for what she lacks in height she makes up for in personality. Her favorite spot is lounging on the back of the couch all splayed out. She also like to find a sun spot and work on her Barbet tan. We find the more she sits in the sun the lighter her color can get. We’re not sure how she began this trend but we adore having a Lia fur collar.
Here is a photo of her favorite past time…

Barbet Cinna is Aero-Dynamic
Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010As you may know Cinna is
a Barbet imported from France in 2007 and living the good life in Indiana. He is a sweet, calm, happy boy. One of his favorite past times is car rides. He especially loves to put his large Barbet head out the window and inhale all the olfactory goodness.
If you allow your dog to enjoy the spring air, I caution you to have the child window lock on. Do this so the dog doesn’t press the window down further enabling them to possibly jump out. One car ride Cinna was soaking in too much flora and fauna and wanted to leap out in the spring air. Luckily we had a good grip on him but I would hate for anyone’s dog to hop out of a moving car!

Cinna’s Car Ride
Thursday, February 4th, 2010Cinna loves to catch air on car rides. This video is a bit rough but you’ll get the idea. When you have a dog do this you have to be careful to lock the window so they don’t push it down further as they may get so many good smells they’ll want to jump OUT of the car.

Barbet Cody Romping in the Waves
Monday, January 25th, 2010Cody’s 1st birthday was earlier this month and to celebrate I’m posting some recent photos of him crashing in the waves. You can tell that he really enjoys romping on the beaches of California. He looks so much like his Dad Cinna! Happy Birthday my gorgeous grandpup!

Barbet Cinna won Best of Breed 12/27/2009
Wednesday, December 30th, 2009While in Canada visiting Paula Ballak of Biscay Water Dogs, Cinna attended the Elora Gorge Dog show on December 27, 2009. He went up against 7 other Barbet and took Best of Breed the first day. Amy Ballak did the handling and if you are ever in need of a pro-handler I can not speak highly enough of her.
Cinna di Barbochos Reiau De Prouvenco aka Cinna was only entered 1 of the 3 days as he had to go home with his parents back to Indiana, but none the less he did a smashing job. Cinna was already a Champion with the CKC but this win was special as it was a Barbet Booster to promote the Barbet at the dog show. There were several people gathered around the ring to check out the relatively new (yet old) breed. It was a great show and Cinna won a lion’s share of dog food and treats.
Amy handling Cinna. Daphne handled by Ula won 2nd place!

Top 5 Tips to Photograph Barbet
Tuesday, December 29th, 2009Barbet are wonderful, love able, SMART, great dogs. However photographing them can be another story. With all their hair curling/waving all over, often covering their eyes it can be downright impossible to get a good photo. Luckily today most people have digital cameras so people can shoot to their hearts content and delete just as liberally.
Below are some simple tips from me, Stacy Able Photography, who specializes in Weddings and Pet photography. I own 5 Barbet and know how frustrating it can be to get the focus correct. Black Barbet tend to be the most difficult to photograph but don’t give up. Try some of these tips below and email your Barbet photos to barbetfanciers@gmail.com or stacy@stacyable.com to submit to future calendars or blog posts.
1) Change angles
Get down on their level, shoot just their feet, tail, eyes, etc
2) Stick with natural light. Turn off or cover the on-camera flash
On-camera flashes flattens everything, cast harsh shadows, and gives pets green or red eyes
3) Stay out of direct sun, shoot in the morning or late afternoon
Bright mid day sun will create harsh shadows, late/early sun is flattering
4) Takes lots of shots
Pets are unpredictable (like children) so you never know how a shoot will go. Take lots of photos and delete the bad ones
5) Edit/Delete bad files
Show only your best work. People do not want to see 100 shots of Barbet fetching.
Below are some shots from Barbet Cleo’s first bath.. notice the different angles. I used a flash bounced off the wall next to me to create a natural light source.

Puppies outside for the FIRST time!
Friday, October 23rd, 2009Gale and her pups are all happy and well in Finland! The amazing litter in Finland had their first outdoor romp a couple of days ago. These wee ones have the old bloodline coloring. The one specifically with the tan paws and chest is a spitting image of some of the barbets in the early 19th century. How amazing to see the Barbet Ancien still there! Hip Hip Barbet!
