SO proud of our Barbet grand puppy, Summit (formerly Colorado). At a little over 4 months of age, she is already retrieving with her owners Ryan and Stephanie of South Carolina. Thank you to Stephanie for capturing this retrieve between Ryan and Summit and sharing it on you tube. We’re SO proud of her and thankful to her great owners for utilizing the intelligence of the breed.

60 degree day: Time to bring the Barbet puppies outside and play!

What a weird winter it’s been. I’m not complaining, as this California girl MUCH prefers warmth to cold and ice, but today is the 6th of January and it’s 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Capitalizing on the warmth, we’ve been taking the pups out as much as we can to start potting training and prep them for their new homes.

Barbet Lia welcomes us home

After photographing a gorgeous Appalachian whimsical wedding in Andrews, North Carolina, we couldn’t wait to get home and pick up our Barbet Lia, who was staying at our in laws. Knowing how excited she’d be we had our flip video on deck to capture her glee.

Barbet Puppy Bric at almost 6 months of age– a Indianapolis meet up

Yesterday I felt like the happiest and luckiest Barbet breeder in North America as I was able to see my grand puppy, Bric. His owner, Lynn and her super nice sister, were passing through Indianapolis on the Antique Trail (which I’ll need to learn more about) so my husband and I went up to visit at a area park. There are no words really how happy, and wonderful this little guy is and how proud I am of him. In our home, he was known as Brogan, my surname, and he has become such a beautiful Barbet. He still has some growing and filling out to do, but his happy, docile, playful temperament is priceless. He reminds me of when we picked up his grandfather, Cinna, in France as Cinna was roughly 6 months of age and had that same happy demeanor.

Every so often in our household there is a beloved toy (amongst the scattered toy graveyard which is our living room half the time) that every dog wants. This Saturday night it was the tiny purple loofah dog. Both Cleo and Cinna felt it was rightly theirs and for a good 30 minutes they stood, in front of the tv for maximum viewing and attention opportunity, at a standstill. Cinna, being the wonderful Barbet gentlemen he is, finally let go as there was a new show with a dog on tv, Wilfred, he had to stair at. These cute antics are a daily occurrence by our Barbet pack which is all the more reason why I really love this great Barbet breed!

I resisted doing this for awhile, but with how social the world is now with the world wide web/facebook/twitter, I finally created a facebook fanpage for American Barbet. This way for those who may be on facebook alot (that would be me) you’ll get American Barbet updates in your facebook feed. Not sure I’ll ever got to twitter as I’m already on there for my photography business (twitter.com/stacyablephoto).

Barbet Bibiche in Quebec earns her CKC WCI ribbon

Barbet, Bibiche di Barbochos Reiau de Prouvenco had DONE IT AGAIN!! The lovely brown Barbet beauty and her proud owners Jacques and Pierrette Cyr, report on August 26, 2011, Bibiche earned her CKC WCI at the Ontario Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever Club. She is the first Barbet in Quebec and in Canada to succeed in this feat. This just goes to show that all our Barbet can be excellent retrievers.

Jacques is not only Bibiche’s owner, but he is her trainer and handler at these events.

Brother Cinna and all of us at American Barbet are proud of you as well Jacques!! Keep up the good work. We can’t wait to see what Bibiche does next!

Barbet Puppies in America: week 4 of life

Raising puppies can be such a joyous time but also a pretty strenuous time as cleaning is never ending and every day you should introduce something new to the babies. Our American Barbet puppies are now 4 weeks old and their canine’s are coming in nicely. Their eyes are turning from blue to hazel/brown of which they will eventually stay a amber brown color. We’ve begun weaning as for us we feel 4 weeks they should be introduced to soft puppy food and lessen their reliance on mom’s milk. They still nurse but hopefully in the next couple of weeks they’ll be done nursing (good thing as their puppy teeth are sharp!) and happy frolicking and eating their mushy puppy food.

Last week we took some easter inspired photos with the Barbet puppies. I had my husband, and hand model (he isn’t fond of his photo taken but will allow me to photograph his hands) with the puppies. He changed shirts for each puppy in various soft easter shades. Then he gave me a large ostrich egg to get some puppy hatching photos. That process didn’t go as well as I’d hoped as the puppies are already bigger then the egg so lesson learned for the next litter.
