With temperatures topping 90 degrees the Barbet get tired pretty quickly outside. Lia, my partner in crime, is faithfully by my side indoors in between frisbees and walks. Barbet are commonly attached to their humans. When I leave a room, I usually have 4 barbet tails quickly trailing behind. Lia is no exception. If you are wanting a dog that is not by your side, the Barbet is not a dog for you.
Amelia or Lia to most really is my girl. She’s a bit small on the current Barbet standard scale (depending on what standard you feel is the correct one) but for what she lacks in height she makes up for in personality. Her favorite spot is lounging on the back of the couch all splayed out. She also like to find a sun spot and work on her Barbet tan. We find the more she sits in the sun the lighter her color can get. We’re not sure how she began this trend but we adore having a Lia fur collar.
Dyna is a very regal Barbet from France. She always stands at alert just in case a frisbee sails past her head. We played frisbee the other night with just her to really let her fetch without the others getting jealous or play keep-away. She is so obedient and always brings the frisbee or ball back without any complaints.
She also loves to cuddle in your lap and is determined for you to pet her. We’ve tried to write emails while having her in our laps and she doesn’t appreciate that as she will bat your hands away from the keyboard.
Here are some photos of her we took the other night. She had been shaved down a couple months ago and her soft curls are coming back nicely. She weighs around 37 pounds or 16.8kg.
As you all know the States has been pummeled with snow these past couple of weeks. Here in Indiana we’ve gotten more snow then I’ve ever known in my life and it’s been a blast. We’ve taken the dogs sledding, snow Frisbee, and just romping through the continually falling snow.
Barbet Lia, who just turned 1, is seen here in the Indiana snow with her trainee Isis. Much to Lia’s dismay, Isis loves to follow Lia during fetch. Isis is really picking up on frisbee while Cleo is having a blast following Belle. They all have the most amazing time in the snow. I can not wait until the next flakes fall as it’s less muddy for one but the pack love to roll, fetch, and “frap” (frantic running and playing) while in the cold stuff.
A fun fact about Barbet tails since you can see it in the photo below.. often when Barbet are happy or interested in something their tails will be held up high. The standard is a crochet hook it long and curved with a slight hook at the end often to be held low/straight behind the body. You can see in Lia and Isis that they are having a blast so their tails are held up higher than normal.
Check out Tug! He is one suave, debonair, metropolitan Barbet! I love how you can see the sky line behind this handsome boy. He’s a lucky pup to go on trots near one of the most gorgeous skylines around.
There was a 7 inch snow fall that blanketed Indiana in early January. Well that meant snow frisbee here in hoosier-ville. All of our Barbet had a blast chasing the pink frisbee along with each other. Barbet LOVE snow. We’ve noticed when Barbet get to romp in the tiny flakes they are awash with energy and joy. They’ll shove their muzzles into the powder and eat up the cold frozen drops.
While they play fetch, they’ll dive into the snow to snatch the frisbee all the while creating a whirlwind of powder and paws. They also enjoy to play snow-bet football as one will get the toy and the others will chase, dodge, and lunge for the frisbee. Eventually someone brings it back for the process to begin again. After 30 minutes of play, snow-dreads will form which will thaw out easily once the Barbet return inside.
Take a peek at the photos of the lovely brown Barbet Sampson. He lives in New Jersey and his owner takes him hunting frequently. Sampson is such a keen hunter/retriever and is every bit the hunter that any of the other pointer/retriever/gun dogs and are very tenacious. Sampson has a short hair cut which for hunting may be easier to keep maintained.

Cody, one of the 5 Barbet living in California, is a beach loving Barbet. His sibling, a wheaten terrier named Brydie, and he enjoy walks and romps of the shores near San Francisco. Cody is nearing his 1 year birthday on January 14, 2010 and is looking gorgeous in the sunset lighting on the California coasts.
Thanks to Tricia for sharing photos of her boys! Happy New Years!!!
