Meet Stacy of American Barbet

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

Those of you who read this and know me disgregard this post. For those just coming across the Barbet through the wonderful world wide web hello! My name is Stacy and I’ve been involved with the Barbet since 2006.  We’ve had two litters of Barbet and hope to have more in the future. American Barbet was created to share news of Barbet in America. I’m a photographer (www.stacyable.com) so often there are no photos of me WITH my barbet. The other night, I had my trusty husband, Walter take some quick shots in the setting sun with Lia and Isis.  Fun fact: I birthed Lia in 2009 and she has me wrapped around her white paw.

Barbet on traditional 120 Film

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

You may or may not know but I am a Indianapolis Wedding and Pet Photographer that lives with 4 beautiful Barbet in southern Indiana. I started American Barbet 3 years ago to help North Americans learn about this beautiful breed (in English). Through the years more websites and blogs have emerged about the Barbet. My focus has been mostly photos and some fun tidbits of information.

To photo-nerd-out I recently had developed photos I took of my Barbet with a Contax 645 on 120mm film. In the days of digital camera, iphone, etc I wanted to go back to the basics and learn the fundamentals of film. Just look below at the amazing quality of film.

Barbet Isis dock dives!!!

Friday, August 6th, 2010

I am SOOO proud of my girl Isis! She is 10 months old and had picked up dock diving with aplomb. At the Indianapolis State Fair there is dogsdocks.com hosting competition dock diving for dogs. Today, August 6, 2010 we took Isis up bright and early to practice. After some coaxing and getting her paws wet she hopped right in and didn’t want to stop! Right now in America there are 2 dock diving dogs: Isis and Finley.

Isis will compete in the novice sometime next week. Today she jumped an average of 11 feet with one jump up to 14 feet. o give you perspective, there are labs jumping 18+ feet with some labs jumping to 26 feet!
Here is a short video… longer ones and photos coming later

Barbet Isis Dock Dives!!!!

Monday, July 26th, 2010

My 10 month old Barbet, Isis took the BIG plunge! We took her out to a lake this past Saturday and although the water was a bit choppy, Isis still managed to jump 2 times after her frisbee. I can not wait to keep working on her (and Lia) on this as it is amazing to see the retrieving instincts taking over all logic. Her ability to leap off a dock to retrieve a frisbee made Walter and I leap, clap, whistle, and do a happy dance. We need to build her confidence in swimming hence the pink polka dot life vest. I do not doubt her strong ability to swim but I fear with all the waves (there were ALOT of boats on saturday) that I wanted to ensure her safety. Yes I’m a paranoid “mom.”

Barbet Isis sports her pink polka dot lifevest

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

Yes yes I know they are water dogs but that still doesn’t mean I won’t worry about them. We got our girl Isis a pink life vest as we’ve been working on retrieving with her in the water. She does SO well and is so determined to get the water toy. Because of that, we felt she needs some help until she strengthens her understanding on swimming. Also we hope to get some boat time in soon so being in the open water with a dog, I’d recommend a life vest.

Here are some more photos of the wee little puppies born in Holland 8ish weeks ago to Quanciendas Aubey x Charly de la serve de la chapelle d’Alexandre, kennel name Von der Leibrücke www.vonderleibrucke.nl

All are doing well and many are off to their new homes. It’s amazing how fast the puppies grow in their 8 weeks of puppy-dom.

Barbet Puppies

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Many of you readers may/may not know that I am a breeder of Barbet in America. We have had Barbet for 6 years now and my sister in law has had one since 2000. I am very proud of what the Barbet community in America has accomplished in that short time and can not wait for what is to come.

I get a few emails and calls a week inquiring about Barbet puppies and litters. I try to be open and honest with people and help them understand these dogs are not a dime a dozen like labradoodles. My husband and I fervently believe in good breeding practices and do not rely on puppies for money. I find that to be the biggest break down in good breeding practices. My husband does capital investing as well as runs a non for profit in Guatemala called Seeds of Help. I am a Indianapolis wedding photographer and graphic designer.

We we breed because we adore the Barbet. Any money made goes into toys, vet care, training, food, and dog shows. We’ve had 2 litters in 4 years and plan on having 1 this winter and 1 in the spring of 2011. If you are wanting a Barbet puppy you should get on a breeders waiting list as wait times can be 9-18 months. Most Barbet have a strict spay/neuter contract to protect the integrity of the breed and prevent unwanted pregnancies or labradoodle mishaps.

I suggest also you do your research on a breeder and ask them LOTS of questions. The Friendly Barbet has a fabulous blog post on things to ask. Chris and Ula are similar in age to Walter and I. They are Barbet breeders in Canada whom I trust and admire for their integrity, perseverance in dog shows, and hunting/training. You can read their post “it breaks our hearts”

Sorry for my rant, but there has been lots of shenanigans lately and I hope you prospective Barbet buyers do your research. Make sure the breeder is on good terms with the CKC or AKC (and the law), provides proper registration paperwork in a timely fashion, has a spay/neuter contract, doesn’t treat dogs as a business commodity, and so on. Don’t be afraid to google the person and ask for vet/references. If things don’t pan out DON’T buy from them.  As Chris and Ula say “Please make an informed choice on which breeders you would like to support and whom you PROMOTE.”

What’s a blog post without a photo.. here are the loves of my life born Jan 2009… If you look closely you’ll see a tiny white paw which is Gingko de Xelaju Amelia aka Lia who is the love of my life.

To be a Barbet is to be very Muddy

Friday, May 28th, 2010

“être crotté comme un Barbet”—to be very, very muddy… Is an old French saying very appropriate for Barbet. Most of my barbet love to shove their noses into a mud puddle or just wade around in muck. Below is a video of my Cleo getting a bath and the mud coming out. Vive le Barbet!!

Barbet Footless Fitzgerald home in Vancouver

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

What a journey for Vikki. She flew to the Macon area (great wine area btw) in France to pick up Fitz from Elaine.  What turned out into a quick trip turned into a bit of a headache. In the end with the volcanic ash over Europe, Vikki had to trek from France to Germany to finally get a flight home. During the traveling adventure, Fitz was a perfect gentleman as you’ll see in the below photos by Vikki.
