Barbet love leftovers

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

It’s a pretty hectic month here in Indiana at American Barbet head quarters. I have 8 weddings coming up to photograph and a cookbook photography project which entails 100 recipes I have to cook, test, and photograph. Our happy Barbet clan is wondering what is going on with all the commotion in the kitchen and in my product photography studio. After the recipes have been photographed most of the food is given to neighbors but some recipes the dogs get to taste test. A recipe for Tapioca was the latest devoured by our crew. Here you can see Barbet Lia head first in the pan.

Dock Diving Dog: Barbet Finley takes the big leap

Monday, July 19th, 2010

Finley, owned by the Barbet Fanciers Club of America VP (barbetfanciers.com) is quite the character. Joanne has been diligent in training, grooming, and socializing him. Now she has ventured Finley into Dock Diving. I can’t wait until Joanne’s article about dock diving as she’s come so far with Finley in such a short time. It is so great to see the Barbet being active in America. In europe it seems everytime you turn around a Barbet is diving, jumping, hunting, and leaping into some great dog activity. Anne in the Netherlands said there were even dog beaches. I can not explain how great it is to see some of these activities being done here in America by Barbet.

Here is Finley taking the big leap:

Barbet playing frisbee in the snow at American Barbet headquarters

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

So I know I am oh a mere 6 months behind on this video, but hey while we are all roasting in 90+ degree weather it’s a nice thought to see the cold snow.

Here is my boy Cinna, imported from France with Elaine (http://chiensdeau.free.fr/BarbetenBresse/), Dyna, Lia, Cleo and Isis all pounding the white fluffy snow. It was snowing as we took the video so apologies for it being a bit dark.

In my blogging this summer, I am trying to help potential barbet buyers see the personality of the Barbet to ensure they are the right fit. No dog is perfect and I vehemently feel buyers should do their research in both breeders and dog breeds. The barbet is an active dog needing lifelong love and training.

One of my favorite quotes: “there are no bad dogs, just bad owners.”

Barbet Epilepsy Research in Finland

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

One of the health issues within the Barbet is Epilepsy. Not many have full blown epilepsy, but I consider most Barbet to be potential carriers. Unfortunately, there are no health tests yet to find out if the Barbet is a carrier of epilepsy, but research is being done daily to get closer to that possibility.

In order for the research to progress, there is a study being done in Finland that needs your cooperation if you have a Barbet in America or in Europe.

Thus far, 102 Barbet questionnaire’s have been sent to the group from all over the world! 13 of them have informed the dog had seizures. It does not matter if you have or have not sent in DNA samples– the questionnaire is still a important part of the research.

If you have not yet sent the questionnaire in please click this link and do so now: http://www.koirangeenit.fi/files/Epilep … naire2.doc

For healthy dog it doesn’t take long, as you skip most of the questions when it doesn’t concern your dog. To send, save the filled out questionnaire to your computer then send it as attachment via e-mail to : ranja.eklund@helsinki.fi or print it out and send it in regular mail to address:

Ranja Eklund/Lohi’s Lab
Biomedicum Helsinki, Room B336b
P.O.Box 63 (Haartmaninkatu 8)
00014 University of Helsinki
FINLAND

And for dog who has had seizures, this is very essential to fill the questionnaire!

Huge thank you to Petra for her ongoing efforts in getting this filled out.

Anne’s Barbet Alba in the Netherlands

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

When we were in France in 2007 to pick up Cinna, we attended the bourg en bresse dog show and met a very friendly handler named Anne. She was handling Cinna’s sister, Cybelle of which won best over all puppy!

Now Anne has a Barbet all her own from Alex and Greet in Holland. Her girl’s official kennel name is Quaciendas Alba Aqua-Aura, Alba for short. Anne just got back from the World Dog Show and I’m sure she did well as Anne is such a skilled handler. I wish I have 1/10 of her skills!

Here are some photos Anne took recently of her Alba playing and running. They really show you how the barbet is a happy, fun, joyful dog that loves to run and play. These gorgeous photos show you the barbet is no couch potato!

Barbet Dog Days of Summer

Friday, June 11th, 2010

It’s summer time so my Barbet are living it up. There is lots of frisbee, walks, bird watching, squirrel hating, and head-hanging-out-the-window car rides. Since I’m a wedding photographer, unfortunately my barbet blog gets sidled at times. I’ll try to take some video and photos and keep things somewhat updated.

The other night we had a wee little boxer puppy visit and Lia was a gracious host (so long as the pup didn’t try to take the frisbee). You can see some photos below.

American Barbet play Frisbee in Snow

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

Here is a fun video of my Barbet romping in snow. Notice Cinna’s sly move to bring the frisbee to Walter then duck and run… He LOVES to play chase with the frisbee with the other Barbet. What is interesting is his daughter, Lia is a champion frisbee player who is now starting to catch the frisbee!

Many shades of a Barbet

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

The Barbet come in many colors. If you look at the old photos and paintings of the Barbet you’ll see many of them were parti colors (mostly white with large black spots), brown, and so forth.

My first experiences with barbet were with predominately black colored pooches. As I further delved into the water dog world I found there were so many more colors and not to mention old blood lines to pursue. In my home, I’m fortunate to have a couple color variations with I feel is great for my breeding program and America.

Here is a photo of Stacy Able Photography + Barbet Dogsthree of my five Barbet. Notice the rich black color of Isis which still has a red tone, then the maroon/mahogany brown of Cleo, and last but not least the fawn beigey red of Lia my puppy with the white paw. Of course there’s my the redhead of the group :)

I’ll be out of town for a week so if there is internet in my destination I’ll blog some more but if not hope you all have a  great week!

Barbet Boone is Home

Friday, May 21st, 2010

Without going into the lengthy story of Boone the Barbet, he is finally rescued and will life the rest of his French Water Dog life with Judy in the greater Seattle area. Judy is a saint for having driven from Seattle to Arkansas to pick the fellow up. I’m always surplussed by the great lengths Barbet fanciers will go to in rescuing a Barbet. The small but strong Barbet community really works together to ensure no Barbet is left behind.

In my 6 years with this breed, there have been 5 Barbet rescues which is incredible if you think how few Barbet there are in America. Fortunately each odd rescue story has a happy ending.
