Pat Hastings Seminar : Barbet

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Paula of Biscay Water Dogs, Ula of The Friendly Barbet, and Me (Stacy Able) of American Barbet joined together in Ohio in October to attend a Pat Hastings seminar on dog structure. Sounds mundane but in the breeding world it was a very important lecture with knowledge essential in improving the Barbet in North America.

Days before the seminar Pat’s assistant emailed Paula and I asking if we knew of anyone with a 8 week old litter. Happened Paula had one that was 7-8 weeks old so the intrepid Canadians drove down 8 puppies to get an evaluation by Pat Hasting. The finding were stunning and really opened up our eyes in viewing puppies structures. I won’t bore you with the details, rather I’ll show you photos of Pat evaluating puppies along with Paula and Ula’s visit to our home in Indiana.

Lia pre hair cut

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

My little cupcake Amelia (Lia) had her first haircut this winter as the snow, burrs, and forest debris was getting knotted in her soft puppy fluff. So prior to the 2 inch puppy cut I took some photos of my fluff ball. Some circles say you should shave a Barbet at 6 months of age for their adult hair cut to come in. We kept her hair growing until 10 months and gave her a puppy cut which is cutting the entire body to 1-2 inches of hair. Ideally you should never shave the barbet down to the skin. The Barbet standard is to keep the dog’s hair long and shaggy which for some is hard to do. By cutting their hair to 1-2 inches of hair you keep the furry, fluffy look of the Barbet.

Barbet Effie is going to Holland

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Effie from Wendy’s litter in England is going to Holland soon. Wendy is an amazing Barbet Fanciers in England and is making amazing progress in the UK for the Barbet. Like the States, England’s Kennel Club doesn’t fully accept the Barbet but with wonderful people like Wendy the Barbet stands a fighting chance. Wendy’s website is: www.barbet.org.uk

Barbet in Snow-Merica

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

As you all know the States has been pummeled with snow these past couple of weeks. Here in Indiana we’ve gotten more snow then I’ve ever known in my life and it’s been a blast. We’ve taken the dogs sledding, snow Frisbee, and just romping through the continually falling snow.

Cinna’s Car Ride

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Cinna loves to catch air on car rides. This video is a bit rough but you’ll get the idea. When you have a dog do this you have to be careful to lock the window so they don’t push it down further as they may get so many good smells they’ll want to jump OUT of the car.

Barbet Cinna’s Studio Debut

Monday, February 1st, 2010

To those who know me, I am a wedding photographer based in Indiana. Besides photography, I harbor a deep love for the Barbet. I’ve been fortunate to be able to do more pet photography which I adore as pets have such expressions, energy, and emotion that can be captured on film.

Awhile ago I was setting up a shoot for a Yorkie named Chanel and Cinna was watching me and wagging his tail as usual. To prep for the session I put him in the “set” and took some quick shots. He was happy as ever to oblige and I’m thrilled with his photos as always!
